QVSR Seafarers Centres has officially launched the QVSR Cruise Crew Lounge located at Tilbury’s London Cruise Terminal.

Charles Hammond OBE, CEO of Forth Ports cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony.

In 2023, QVSR approached the port management at The Port of London Tilbury to see if it would be possible to create a cruise crew lounge in empty office space at the terminal.

It was proposed that this space would be used to create an area, which cruise crew could use when they came ashore to relax and share in conversation with family and friends via free Wi-Fi and chat with fellow crew members away from their work environment.

The lounge area would also include a small shop where top-ups, confectionary and souvenirs could be purchased.

The port management duly allocated three unused offices.

With funding received from The Seafarers’ Charity, the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and a private donor, the space was transformed into a series of seafarers’ lounges, with a new kitchen area and seating.

This work was undertaken under the direction of QVSR/MtS Port Chaplain, Ruth Campbell by a number of volunteers, including those from UK P&I Club Thomas Miller.

This facility will see up to 8,000 seafarers use it per year with around 200 crew members making use of it each time a cruise ship berths at Tilbury.

Alexander Campbell, CEO QVSR & QVSR Seafarers Centres, said: “It is a great privilege to serve seafarers; often those working on cruise ships can be forgotten. Their day to day duties can be hectic with little time to stop and switch off. The QVSR Cruise Crew Lounge allows them space to be themselves, chat with loved ones and switch off from their day to day duties.”

Hammond added: “Forth Ports are fully committed to supporting the welfare needs of seafarers and promoting their wellbeing. We are delighted to partner with QVSR in launching this new Cruise Crew Lounge at Tilbury – London International Cruise Terminal.

“Often those seafarers serving on cruise ships can be forgotten, this new lounge facility underlines the value we place on them and gives them a place to relax and spend time away from the ship,” he said.
