US Maritime service provider Vane Brothers and UK energy Shell have completed their first marine biofuel delivery at New York.
The bunkering operation was carried out in early June at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, where the Royal Caribbean cruise ship ‘Silver Shadow’ received bio-blended marine fuel.
The delivery was supported by the tug ‘Fort McHenry’ and the barge ‘Double Skin 37’, the company said on a social media post.
Marine biofuel blends are becoming increasingly popular in the shipping industry as a lower-emission alternative to traditional marine fuels.
These fuels are considered as ‘drop-in’ solutions, which means they can be used in existing ship engines without needing major changes or upgrades.
While ports in Europe and Asia already have more established biofuels supply chains, access to these fuels is slowly expanding for oceangoing ships in the US.
