At the end of June, Gasum bunkered Royal Caribbean’s latest cruise ship, ‘Utopia of the Seas’ with bio-LNG.
She is an ‘Oasis’ class cruise ship, the first in the class to be powered by LNG. As an LNG-powered ship it can also run on bio-LNG or a mixture of both, Gasum explained.
’Utopia of the Seas’ was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, and transitioned towards its home port of Port Canaveral in Florida on the bunkered bio-LNG.
Bio-LNG is a readily available pathway to reducing CO2 emissions in maritime transport – its life cycle emissions can even be negative depending on the feedstock used, Gasum said.
Gasum produces biomethane at its 17 biogas plants and supplies bio-LNG to maritime customers on a mass balance basis.
The company added that it will also start to distribute synthetic e-methane around 2026.
