The Greek Port of Volos has completed extensive restoration works, following the severe damage caused by the devastating floods of 2023.
The natural disaster had resulted in over 700,000 cu m of debris being deposited in the port basin, significantly reducing operating depths and forcing the cancellation of multiple cruise ship calls.
After months of dredging, operations at the cruise pier have resumed. The approach points now offer a restored and functional depth of 11 m, re-establishing the port’s capacity to accommodate large cruise vessels.
The first major milestone came on 12th June, 2025, with the arrival of ‘Norwegian Viva’ – a 293 m long vessel with a draft exceeding 7.5 m – carrying 3,352 passengers and 1,469 crew.
The ship’s successful call marked a key moment in Volos’s return to the Mediterranean cruise circuit, the port authority said.
A new bathymetric survey by the Greek Hydrographic Service was scheduled for late June, providing updated depth data for cruise companies and relevant stakeholders.
This will further facilitate itinerary planning and allow cruise lines to once again include Volos in their deployments.
