Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) is the co-ordinating architect for a new generation of Princess Cruises ships, called the ‘Sphere’ class, the first of which is to be named ‘Sun Princess’.

In addition to designing several key areas on board, TDoS has also led the development of the design identity of the new platform, the company claimed.

The ship’s architecture is described as light and transparent, with authentic and natural finishes and textures, and with a fresh touch of a relaxing coastal lifestyle. The smooth, clean lines and design aesthetics was inspired by the Seawitch icon, popularised in the original ‘Love Boat’ TV series.

‘Sun Princess’ will be the largest ship to be built in Italy thus far and will be delivered by Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard in early 2024, followed by a sistership in spring 2025.

The first steel for the ‘Sun Princess’ was recently cut at Centro Servizi Navali in San Giorgio di Nogaro.

At 175,500 gt, the eco-friendly ‘Sphere’ class vessels will each accommodate around 4,300 guests and will be based on a next-generation platform design.

They will also be the first Princess Cruises ships to be dual-fuel powered primarily by LNG, which will significantly reduce emissions and marine gasoline consumption.

Fredrik Johansson, TDoS Partner & Executive Director, said: “We’ve had an extremely creative and innovative collaboration period, working closely together with Princess Cruises and the HAL Group to define what the Princess brand stands for today – and how it will develop over a 15-20 year period.

“It’s a wider scope than designing the ship’s interiors, which is great in itself. It’s about helping to develop a very well-established and strong brand into something that stays prosperous and relevant far into the future. It’s incredibly inspiring, and a fantastic vote of confidence from one of the biggest players in our industry,” he said.

Princess Cruises said that ‘Sun Princess’ will boast stunning views, expansive venues, innovative entertainment venues, multi-story dining rooms and next level stateroom accommodations, while remaining true to the smooth clean lines and design aesthetics inspired by the Seawitch icon

She will feature a brand-iconic Piazza and The Dome, an entertainment space inspired by the terraces of Santorini.

“’Sun Princess’ is a new and bespoke ship platform, designed to simultaneously embrace Princess heritage while boldly pressing into the future with iconic, elegant and pure lines unique to our brand,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises’ President.

“A show-stopping, first-of-its-kind Dome on the top deck and suspended glass Piazza in the centre of ‘Sun Princess’ offer innovative designs showcasing expansive ocean views for incredible opportunities to connect with the sea.”

The Piazza will span three decks, forming an architectural feature offering guests an outward looking suspended space with comfortable seating and areas to enjoy the ocean views in every direction. A LED screen will also be installed in the centre of the Piazza that can be moved and configured to deliver live entertainment programming.

Adjacent to the Piazza Atrium will be a new coffee shop, Coffee Currents, Bellini’s Cocktail Bar, along with Princess favourites like Crooners Bar and Alfredo’s Pizzeria.

What is claimed will be a stand-out structure on board ‘Sun Princess’ will be The Dome.

Inspired by the terraces of Santorini, it is a multi-level covered deck and the first-true glass-enclosed dome to be constructed on a cruise ship.

During the day, it will feature an indoor/outdoor pool, and a water feature. At night, the pool will become a stage, and the Dome will be transformed into an entertainment venue with a South Beach vibe, lighting effects and the ability to deliver aerial performances.

With 2,157 staterooms, including 50 suites and 100 connecting rooms, the 21-deck ‘Sun Princess’ will feature more outdoor balcony space and all balcony accommodations will feature an in-room sofa.

Also unveiled exclusively on ‘Sun Princess’ will be new suite accommodations, the Signature Collection. These suites will include access to the Signature Restaurant, Signature Lounge, and Signature Sun Deck, a private area of the Sanctuary.
