Last month, the Italian SOMEC Group won two orders worth a total of €31.6 mill for marine glazing and naval architecture engineered systems for cruise ships.

The first contract, signed with Finland’s Meyer Turku shipyard, concerns the ‘Icon’ class vessels for Royal Caribbean International, one of the most advanced in the world in terms of concept and tonnage.

This contract was valued at €19.4 mill (of which €7.5 mill is in option) and expands on an order already received by SOMEC from Meyer Turku in 2019.

Under the terms of the contract, SOMEC will create greater glazed area surfaces, as well as supply motorised systems for awnings.

The second agreement, signed with the French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique and worth €12.2 mill (of which €2.5 mill is in option), concerns the fifth ship in the ‘Edge’ series for Celebrity Cruises, also part of Royal Caribbean Group.

SOMEC will provide the entire balcony package, which will include the latest generation automated vertical windows capable of optimising spaces, while ensuring the comfort of the cabins.

“These new orders represent a sign of confidence in the recovery of shipbuilding,” said SOMEC Chairman, Oscar Marchetto (pictured).

“A positive trend is showing up, which will generate significant orders for new ships as early as 2024 and SOMEC is ready to benefit from it.“
