A new Polish-based passenger and freight ferry joint venture company has been formed by local rivals, Polferries, Unity Line, and EuroAfrica Shipping Lines.
Called PolSca Baltic Ferries, the new company was formed to strengthen Poland’s position in the maritime transport sector between the country and Scandinavia.
The company plans to initially operate with 10 ferries, with another three currently under construction at Gdansk’s Remontowa Shiprepair yard.
Unity Line is operated by state-owned Polska Żegluga Morska (PZM), while Euroafrica Shipping Lines is a private company under the Hass Holdings Group.
Both companies operate three ferries on the Świnoujście/Ystad and Świnoujście/Trelleborg routes.
Polferries is operated by Polska Żegluga Bałtycka (PZB), and operates four ferries in the Baltic (plus one on charter in the Mediterranean). Its routes include Świnoujście/Ystad and Gdańsk/Nynashamn.
The first of the three newbuilding ropaxes will be ‘Jantar Unity’, scheduled to be delivered later this year. She will also be the first to operate under the new brand.
The company said that new routes will be announced in the future.
PolSca will be operated as a joint-stock company, with the three ferry operators as equal shareholders and will be based at Świnoujście.
