The Mormugao Port Authority’s (MPA) planned domestic and international cruise terminal project, which will offer ro-ro and ropax services, has received approval from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA).
In order to obtain GCZMA clearance for the construction of a domestic and international cruise port and related amenities at Mormugao, the MPA had presented a proposal to the GCZMA, according to local media.
The plan was approved by the coastal authority at its meeting earlier last month.
With an estimated cost of Rs101.72 crore, the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways will fund Rs50.86 crore towards the project through the Sagarmala Scheme, while the Ministry of Tourism will fund R 50 crore through the ‘Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development Scheme,’ while the MPA will be responsible for the remaining amount.
The terminal will feature duty-free retail stores, lounges, a food court, a parking lot, waiting lounges, luggage carousels, immigration desks, check-in counters, and passenger and baggage handling rooms.
It will occupy 9,900 sq m, while covering 3,700 sq m, the commercial structure will feature a shopping area targeted at cruise guests but also made available to the general public.
The MPA now has a cruise berth that is 450 m long. When two cruise ships arrive simultaneously, a second berth—currently leased to the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy—is utilised.
