MEYER WERFT has introduced a climate-neutral cruise ship concept specifically for the increasingly older target group of over-80s.
Named ‘Serenity’, the concept was presented at the Seatrade Miami cruise show last week.
The project’s starting point was the demographic change seen with a focus on the US and Europe.
For example, in 2100, people 80 years and older will have same size population as the 65s and older today in the US.
“We derived a new target group from this, which we called 80+, and took a look at what needs and requirements such a target group would have,” explained Tim Krug from the MEYER WERFT Concept Development Group.
“Put simply, today there are ships for young, middle-aged and old, and in future there will be a need for a sub-divided older target group.
“However, it is important to note that we are not talking about a nursing home. ‘Serenity’ would offer services for people who live in Independent living homes with some additional features from assisted living homes.
“Good examples are additional requirements in terms of walking routes on board, eg corridor widths and social interactions, as well as the passenger flow and orientation on board in general,” Krug explained.
“MEYER WERFT is the only shipyard to offer the complete range from river cruise ships to large ocean-going vessels. With a long tradition of innovation and new products, we always create added value for shipowners, port operators and other customers in the maritime sector,” claimed Thomas Weigend, the shipbuilding group’s Executive Vice President Sales.
In addition, MEYER WERFT confirmed that it was holding constructive talks with Ulyssia Residences about the possibility of constructing an around 320 m long residential cruise ship.
The shipbuilder claimed that it was the preferred partner for the realisation of the project. However, no binding, written order for the construction of a ship has yet been placed.
MEYER WERFT further added that it was continuing to work intensively with Ulyssia Residences on the project’s design and will provide transparent and timely information on further developments at a later date.
