Meyer Group company, MEYER RE has joined engine designer and manufacturer, Everllence, formerly MAN Energy Solutions, to offer methanol propulsion conversions.
This new alliance aims to make shipping more sustainable, including cruise ships, the companies said.
The goal is to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions while ensuring the operational efficiency of fleets and compliance with current environmental regulations.
A key aspect of the collaboration is the retrofitting of Everllence 4-stroke engines already in use. This offers shipping companies a viable and scalable alternative for switching to more environmentally friendly fuels.
“This framework partnership agreement lays the foundation for a strong, trusting, and future-oriented collaboration on our shared path to a greener future,” said Bernd Siebert, Head of Retrofit & Upgrade at Everllence.
“With our methanol retrofit packages, we offer customers a cost-effective solution for making older engines future-proof. Together with MEYER RE, we will now develop a holistic concept for retrofitting the entire ship’s system.”
In particular, the retrofit of cruise ships presents a huge challenge. Henning Jongebloed, Head of Sales at MEYER RE, explained: “Cruise ships function like small cities with highly complex subsystems.
“Replacing an engine or a new fuel alone is not enough. A holistic approach is required. Therefore, collaboration with experienced partners is crucial to ensure the smooth functioning of the entire system, including power generation,” he said.
As part of the package, the partners intend to develop a detailed roadmap outlining the technical and operational steps for the transition to methanol as the primary fuel.
It will include vessel modifications, the development of the necessary methanol refuelling infrastructure, and the establishment of industry-wide safety standards and best practices.
