The ‘Hamburg’ will operate exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO) starting 1st January, 2020, as required by IMO regulations, Plantours has announced.
The 15,000-ton, 400-pax ‘Hamburg’ operates in Antarctica during the winter season, where HFO is banned, and will be returning to Europe next spring.
She will then sail on MGO permanently, according to Plantours Managing Director, Oliver Steuber.
The company’s summer programme includes the Arctic, including Iceland, Greenland and Svalbard, as well as the Great Lakes.
She was built in 1997 as the ‘Columbus for Hapag-Lloyd and has been operated by Bremen-based Plantours under charter since 2012.
