Canary Islands ferry operator, Fred.Olsen Express, recorded a 10% increase in the number of passengers carried, compared to 2022.

To respond to the increase in demand, the company increased the number of trips to a total of 22,000 last year.

Fred.Olsen Express ended 2023 carrying 3,616,000 passengers, and more than 1 mill vehicles. These figures represent an increase of 10% and 5%, respectively, compared to the previous year, thus returning to 2019 levels before the pandemic.

To respond to the growth in demand, the shipping company increased the number of trips by 12% last year, up to 22,000, compared to the 19,500 made in 2022.

According to Fred.Olsen Express’ Fleet Manager, Juan Ignacio Liaño, “This is a record figure for the company that highlights the good response of these more than 3.5 mill passengers to the advantages of travelling by boat between the islands. It tells us that they positively value the flexibility, comfort or extensive schedules, in addition to the possibility of travelling with vehicles, offered by maritime transport in the Canary Islands.

“The result has been influenced by the company’s ability to understand and respond to the demand of individual and professional travellers throughout the year, with special attention to those designated dates and events in which the need to travel increases,” he added.

The company explained that as part of the shipping company’s commitment to offering a service of the highest quality and comfort, the launch, in June, 2023, of a new pet-friendly accommodation stands out.

Fred.Olsen Express offered three different options for pets, taking into account the characteristics of each – pet carrier, pet room and pet sofa.

In total, more than 63,000 pets travelled on Fred.Olsen Express ferries last year.

In addition, the company achieved a milestone in its commitment to environmental sustainability and the development of initiatives that minimise the impact on the environment.

Undertaken by the launch of ‘In Harmony with the Sea’, a project in which the shipping company encompasses and evaluates the scope of the more than 70 initiatives it develops, this is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and with the Canarian Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.

These sustainability measures are aimed at both on board services and innovation and improvement of all its processes. They also include awareness-raising and citizen participation actions, such as talks, workshops or beach and coastline clean-ups, through which more than 550 volunteers have been involved and have collected nearly 1,000 k of waste.

During 2023, Fred.Olsen Express operated five inter-island services utilising fast ropax trimarans and transported more than 1.3 mill m of cargo and more than 100,000 cargo units, including medical supplies, groceries and other products.
