Satellite service provider SES is to provide global connectivity services to Explora Journeys.
The system will be fitted on the MSC subsidiary’s first ship, ‘Explora 1’.
SES claimed that guests and crew will benefit from its low latency, highest available throughput and global Cruise mPOWERED connectivity service.
Guests on board ‘Explora I’ will enjoy complementary, high-speed, reliable, and uninterrupted Wi-Fi, no matter how remote their location – if they are streaming content or sharing their on board experience from any part of the ship.
In addition, enhanced connectivity will improve crew welfare and training, employee performance, motivation, and retention, SES said.
This connectivity is delivered by SES’ upcoming second-generation medium earth orbit (MEO) system – O3b mPOWER – which operates around 8,000 km above the earth’s surface, and SES’ geostationary (GEO) fleet of satellites ensuring seamless connectivity.
Michael Ungerer, Explora Journeys CEO (pictured), commented, “High-speed, reliable and uninterrupted connectivity is no longer a ‘nice to have’, with demand for connectivity services at sea growing in tandem with the development of social media platforms.
“Today’s guests simply expect seamless and uninterrupted connectivity comparable to on land as they want to share their experiences and stay online as much as possible. We are pleased to be able to offer this connectivity experience to our guests on board ‘Explora I’ thanks to SES’ services,” he said.
Simon Maher, SES’ Vice President Global Sales, Cruise Maritime Services, added, “It is incredibly exciting to be working with Explora Journeys whose innovative approach is setting new standards in ultra-luxury curated travel experiences at sea. Connectivity is one of the most important enablers for such travel experiences from both a guest and crew point of view.
“Our O3b mPOWER ultra-fast, low-latency connectivity is empowering a new experience that will revolutionise the ultra-luxury expedition maritime segment,” he said.
Explora Journeys has also agreed a new partnership with Amadeus.
This will provide an online booking and fulfilment facility to connect the luxury travel brand with more travel agencies and a broader audience, the company said.
The software will display content, which includes images of Explora Journeys’ fleet, suites and deck plans, plus the opportunity for travel advisors to market pre- and post- guest experiences in the same booking with one PNR on the Amadeus Cruise Portal.
Chris Austin, Chief Sales Officer, Explora Journeys, explained, “Amadeus is one of the global travel industry’s leading distribution companies and it will further enable our travel partners to access Explora Journeys’ inventory, pricing and our rich content on a real time basis to improve further the booking experience for our growing travel advisor community.
“This announcement with such a great partner as Amadeus comes as we remain firmly on track for the first of our six luxury ships – ‘Explora I’ – to make her maiden journey in less than 12 months’ time, May 2023, and, when demand for luxury ocean tourism has returned to pre-pandemic levels,” he said.
Robert Buckman, Head of North America, Travel Sellers, Amadeus, added “By forging our partnership with Explora Journeys we’re strengthening our marketplace to help travel advisors connect their customers to real-time cruise content and offers.
“With Amadeus Cruise Portal, travel advisors gain access to Explora Journey’s content, can inspire their travellers with rich multimedia, and finalise a booking easily through a single connection,” he concluded.
