Environmental engineer, SulNOx has partnered with luxury cruise ship operator, Crystal.
This marks SulNOx’s first involvement with the expanding cruise market.
The ’Crystal Symphony’, a 51,068 gt vessel powered by six Wärtsilä-Sulzer diesel engines, was fitted with an SulNOxEco data system, while berthed at Piraeus in April, 2024.
An evaluation, organised in collaboration with SulNOx distributor, A&S International, was carried out between May and December, last year.
Data collected revealed an average fuel saving of 3.4% over the period, accompanied by a significant reduction in black smoke emissions – a critical improvement for cruise operators in ports and the Norwegian fjords.
Roberto Fazi, Crystal’s Senior Vice President of Marine Operations, said, “The results of the tests carried out after the introduction of SulNOxEco on board have proven to be very promising. We observed measurable fuel savings, cleaner engines, and reduced emissions.
“As sustainability becomes a key driver for growth in the cruise sector, this innovation helps us enhance operational efficiency, reduce our environmental impact, and provide a more sustainable experience for our guests,” he said.
Building on the success of the evaluation, Crystal is to adopt SulNOxEco across its fleet.
With the cruise holiday market projected to grow from $9.2 bill in 2023 to $25.4 bill by 2033, according to Spherical Insights & Consulting, the need for environmentally responsible solutions has never been greater.
