Disney Cruise Line’s 208,000 gt ‘Disney Adventure’ was floated out of the former Werften shipyard at Wismar on 19th April.

The company’s largest cruise ship will also be the first Disney ship to be based all year in Asia when she is delivered in December this year.

Disney acquired the newbuilding in November, 2022 for what was believed to be €40 mill from the bankrupt MV Werften Shipyard after agreeing to complete her construction in Germany.

Building work had started in 2018 with steel being cut at Werften’s shipyards in both Wismar and Rostock and the main assembly starting later that year in Rostock.

The 216 m long midship section was built in Rostock. It was floated out and towed to Wismar in November, 2019.

The was around 80% complete when MV Werften filed for bankruptcy in January, 2022 on the back of its parent company, Genting Hong Kong and the group’s Dream Cruise Line’s demise.

She was originally named ’Global Dream’ and was designed for a passenger capacity of 9,500 plus 2,000 crew.

Blocks for the second cruise ship in the series were sold for scrap after the bankruptcy.

Meyer Werft is overseeing her completion at Wismar, as the shipyard was sold to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems by the administrators.

The ship was redesigned for a reduced capacity of around 6,700 pax.

Disney has signed a five-year agreement with the Singapore Tourism Board to base the Disney Adventure year-round in Singapore operating short cruises,  where she is due to start operations on 15th December, offering cruises to nowhere ranging from between three to five nights.

Disney recently introduced its sixth cruise ship and is building two more ‘Wish’ class at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg shipyard, while its Japanese partner has also ordered a cruise ship to be operated in tandem with the Tokyo Disney Resort. Disney has also contracted Meyer Werft to build another three cruise ships of a new type.
