A new expedition cruise vessel project, developed by EWE cruises, Deltamarin and Tillberg design of Sweden (ToS), has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from class society DNV.

The project was unveiled at Marintec Shanghai on 7th December, 2023, alongside the presentation of AiP certificates to the parties involved.

The 17,000 gt project is designed to accommodate 200 pax for worldwide operation, covering both Polar and tropical regions.

One of its unique design features is a full capacity for simultaneous Zodiac expedition trips for all guests, Deltamarin said.

The design was developed jointly by the owner EWE cruises, naval architect Deltamarin, architectural designer ToS, and in close collaboration with the Chinese Polar Guide Association.

As for the ropax, Deltamarin has signed a contract with China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai) for the approval and detail design of La Méridionale’s latest ropax project.

As a part of the contract, Deltamarin will be responsible for providing both the approval and detail design services for the construction of two ropaxes.

Deltamarin had earlier provided the shipyard with consultancy and contract design services for the project.

Scheduled for delivery in early 2027, the vessels will each accommodate 1,000 pax in 264 cabins of seven categories, including 21 luxury cabins with balconies.

With dimensions of 180 m in length and 30.8 m in width, the vessels will each operate on twin engines with a combined output of 21,000 kW. While primarily using conventional LNG, the engines will include multi-fuel capabilities, being able to accommodate future adoption of biogas and synthetic methane.

Moreover, the integration of a 13 MWh battery pack will enable zero-emission capabilities while in port—a significant advantage, especially at the port in Corsica, given the limited availability of shore power solutions.

Deltamarin and Weihai shipyard have worked together on previous projects, such as the ‘Superstar’ ropax project for Finnlines, E-Flexer ropaxes for Stena Line and the Rosa dei Venti ro-ro vessel for Italian Giovanni Visentini Trasporti Fluviomarittimi.

Meanwhile, the second and last of Finnlines’ ‘Superstar’ ropaxes, was delivered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai, China, on 12th December, 2023.

‘Finncanopus’ will follow her sistership on Finnlines’ service between Finland and Sweden (Naantali/Långnäs/Kapellskär) in February, 2024.
