On 30th May, 2024, the keel laying ceremony took place of the ‘Douglas Mawson’ at the CMHI shipyard in China.

She is number seven in the series of Ulstein-designed ‘Infinity’ class expedition cruise ships for SunStone.

This series is fitted with Ulstein’s patented X-Bow design to maximise comfort for passengers and crew.

The interior design was described as Nordic. This class of vessels was the result of collaboration between Danish expedition cruise specialists, Niels-Erik Lund of SunStone, Norwegian naval architects, Ulstein Design & Solution, US interior designer, Tomas Tillberg Design USA, Finnish interior contractors, Makinen and the Chinese shipyard.

All of the vessels are based on Ulstein’s CX103 design and customised to the client’s requirements.

‘Douglas Mawson’ will be operated by Australian Aurora Expeditions, which is also responsible for two other vessels in the series, ‘Greg Mortimer’ and ‘Sylvia Earle’.

The latest vessel will be able to accommodate 154 guests in an extensive range of cabins, including singles.

Ulstein’s X-Bow has been fitted on more than 100 vessels and was first seen on a cruise ship with the ‘Greg Mortimer’.
