Spanish ferry company, Armas Trasmediterránea Group transported 3.3 mill pax, 1.1 mill vehicles, nearly 80,000 pets, and 4.5 mill linear m of cargo, which equals 8.5 mill tonnes, last year.
This was achieved through the 26 connections offered between the Canary Islands, southern Andalusia and northern Africa.
The company presented its connectivity plan for 2025 to the Canary Islands Government, which includes the maintaining of its operations between Tenerife and El Hierro, as well as improvements to the connection between La Palma and Tenerife.
Since 1st January this year, a fast ferry connects Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Cristianos, which complements the freight operation, which is operated by the company’s two largest ships.
Following the recent award by the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, due to the declaration of public service obligation (OSP), the company has also reinforced the connections between Melilla and Almería and Motril (Granada).
Since the beginning of the year, the company has been carrying out three weekly trips for passengers and vehicles on the Almería/Melilla route, and another three on the Motril/Melilla route.
To promote connectivity in the Canary Islands, the company has asked to operate in Puerto de las Nieves (Gran Canaria), and to establish a regular service with a fast ferry for passengers and rolling cargo between Agaete and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In addition, this year, operations between the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands have been concentrated at Cádiz, which meant the transfer of services previously run from Huelva.
One of the company’s major challenges during 2024 was the Marhaba campaign or Operation Crossing the Strait 2024 (OPE), which culminated with 850,000 people and 265,000 vehicles being transported.
To guarantee an efficient service, the services were reinforced with more than 3,200 departures, between 1st June and 15th September, from Algeciras, Malaga, Motril and Almeria, to Ceuta, Melilla, Morocco, Algeria and vice versa.
Armas Trasmediterránea has also renewed its commitment to the carriage of fruit (mainly bananas) and vegetables from the Canary Islands to the Peninsula, utilising the ‘Villa de Tazacorte’, ‘Ciudad de Valencia’ and the ‘Volcán de Tinamar’.
In parallel, Armas Trasmediterránea has offered support to the relevant authorities in humanitarian aid, with the transfer of migrants, materials and help offered to alleviate the effects of the flooding in Valencia.
Armas Trasmediterránea closed last year with the aim of introducing biofuels to its fleet.
