Azamara President and CEO, Larry Pimentel (pictured), has resigned.

His resignation came along with the announcement that Azamara parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), had laid off or furloughed 26% of its US workforce equal to about 1,300 of its 5,000-plus employees.

Pimentel had determined it was the right time to step down amid discussions regarding how to best help the cruise line bear the brunt of the cutbacks, RCL Chairman and CEO Richard Fain reportedly said in a company memo seen by media newswires.

Before joining Azamara Club Cruises in the middle of 2009, Pimentel was President and CEO of SeaDream Yacht Club, a position he held since 2001.

Before that, he was President and CEO of Cunard Line and Seabourn Cruise Line from 1992 to 2001, and was President and CEO of tour operator Classic Hawaii from 1983 to 1992.
