Taking into consideration the ongoing occurrence of passenger ferry incidents with often high numbers of casualties, IMO’s recent Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meeting  agreed to include a new item on measures to improve domestic ferry safety on its agenda for the next session.

An estimated four sessions will be needed to complete the work, the IMO said.

This work will focus on developing model regulations on domestic ferry safety; providing guidance on the incorporation of model regulations on domestic ferry safety in domestic law; developing online training material on domestic ferry safety; and continuing to provide technical assistance to countries as necessary through the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).
